ILETA Monthly May MeetUP 2026 live from Sydney Australia

The ILETA May Online MeetUp will be coming to you live from Sydney, Australia. To celebrate our tour of Australia, we will be exploring the important topic in legal communication:

Pitfalls in Legal Translation: Contract Terms and Traps:

What translators and lawyers need to be aware of!

The discussion, led by Sofia Parastatidou, Special Counsel and President of ILETA, will highlight how legal translation goes far beyond linguistic accuracy. Translators and lawyers must also navigate differences between legal systems, legal traditions, and contractual interpretation.

Some of the key issues we will examine include:

Best efforts” vs. “reasonable efforts”
• “Warranty” vs. “guarantee”
• “Termination” vs. “rescission”
• The concept of “consideration” in common law contracts
• “Good faith” obligations across jurisdictions

As we all know, what may appear to be a straightforward equivalent in another language, on the surface, can carry very different legal consequences.

A mistranslated clause will create ambiguity, shift liability, or may even affect the enforceability of a contract.

We will be discussing, what makes an effective legal translation in terms of linguistic precision.
