To Teach or Not to Teach Grammar ? That Is the Question…
In legal English, few topics stir as much debate as grammar instruction. Should we teach grammar explicitly? Should learners absorb it through exposure? Or is the answer somewhere in between?
On one side, grammar-focused instruction provides structure, clarity, and confidence—especially for learners who thrive on rules and patterns. It can be a valuable tool for accuracy, particularly in professional or academic settings where precision matters.
On the other hand, too much emphasis on grammar can stifle communication, overwhelm learners, and slow down fluency. After all, language is meant to be used, not just analyzed.
So, what’s the right approach?
Perhaps it is not a question about whether we teach grammar, but how we teach it:
- Integrating grammar into real communication tasks.
- Teaching it in context rather than isolation.
- Encouraging learners to notice patterns, not memorising rules.
What do you think?
Should grammar take center stage in your classroom—or stay backstage as learners explore language through use?
